Why Small Goals Are Holding You Back

Think Small, Stay Small

Happy New Year, Friend.

With the arrival of 2025, I want to talk to you about goals.

There’s a popular quote by Ellen Johnson Sirleaf which goes:

If your dreams don't scare you, they aren't big enough.

Small goals might feel more ‘realistic’, but here’s the problem:

They let you off the hook.

They give you permission to keep your vices, skip building solid habits, avoid setting up real systems, and sidestep reworking those deeply rooted beliefs that shape your actions.

And because of that?

You don’t do what’s actually necessary to achieve even the small goal you set.

Every step forward gets dragged back by the things you’ve chosen to ignore.

But here’s the beauty of big goals:

They force your hand.

Big goals demand a full transformation.

They demand everything from you.

They require you to step up, leave no loose ends, and become the version of yourself who can actually achieve them.

As you write down what you want to achieve this year, don’t hold back.

Dream bigger than you think is reasonable.

And then double down on it.

Big goals demand big growth.

And that’s where the real change happens.

I’ll wrap this up with a quote from Dan Koe:

You're bored because you're comfortable. You're comfortable because you're scared of change. You're scared of change because you lack perspective. Don't change everything at once. Change one thing at a time. But don't aim small. Big irrational goals. Small rational steps.

Much love,
